PROJECT ACTIVITIES

The main goal of the project is a unified method in the program area for treatment of short-term stored excavated sulfide soil, shaft bottom surfaces, deposited sulfide soil and deposited dredged materials rich in sulfides. In order to reach this goal, three milestones have been set:

1. Treatment of sulfide-rich material has been tested in both laboratory and field environment and the treatment method has been implemented on short-term stored excavated sulfide soil, shaft bottom surfaces, deposited sulfide soil and deposited dredged materials rich in sulfides.

2. The stakeholders have been informed and educated in how to practically implement the method for treatment of materials rich in sulfides.

3. A cross-border network has been established between universities that carry out research on sulfide soils and stakeholders who handle sulfide soils in Finland and Sweden.

The milestones will be reached trough the project activities that have been divided over five work packages (WP 1–5):

Work package name

WP 1 – Communication

Short description

  • Two-way dialogue with representatives from the stakeholders (focus group)
  • Web page
  • Workshops and seminars
  • Method description
  • Conferences, publications, reports

WP 2 – Project management

  • Steering group meetings
  • Project meetings
  • Equality integration
  • Project reporting

WP 3 – Inhibition of the oxidation process in excavated sulfide soils

  • Laboratory and field studies with treatment of short-term stored excavated sulfide soil
  • Laboratory and field studies with treatment of shaft bottom surfaces

WP 4 – Geotechnical characteristics of permanently deposited sulfide soil

  • Geotechnical characterization of materials rich in sulfide
  • Laboratory and field studies with mechanical stabilization of excavated sulfide soil

WP 5 – Inhibition of the oxidation process in dredged sulfide-rich sediments

  • Laboratory and field studies with treatment of dredged sulfide-rich sediments
